CHoSTM members publish a collection in Sabers en Acció about the global history of science and technology
CHoSTM members recently collaborated with the digital humanities project Sabers en acció. The initiative of developing a collection about the global history of science and technology counted with the participation of CHoSTM’s staff Professor David Edgerton, Dr David Brydan, Dr Viswanathan Venkataraman and Dr Shankar Nair, and alumni Dr Catriona Bayers and Dr Edisson Aguilar Torres.
In April 2025, CHoSTM members were invited to discuss their articles in a one-day workshop, titled “Knowledge(s) in construction,” with students and academics based at the Institut Interuniversitari López Piñero. The visit was organised by former visiting fellow at CHoSTM and Professor of History of Science at the Universidad d’Alacant, Antonio García Belmar and coordinator of Sabers en Acció, Professor José Ramón Bertomeu Sánchez.
The published articles cover a variety of topics about the modern history of science and technology in the 19thand 20th centuries. The articles contribute to current historiographical discussions on the global history of science and technology, showcasing recent research within the Centre. It includes cases focused on water purification techniques, the history of chlorination, the development of ideas about modern intelligence science (forthcoming) and of agricultural techniques. The collection will include an article on energy by historian and former CHoSTM member, Jean-Baptiste Fressoz.
Sabers en Acció is an open access digital encyclopedia published in Spanish, Catalan and English. The editorial team includes researchers and academic staff based in the Institut Interuniversitari López Piñero and the Societat Catalana d’Història de la Ciència i de la Tècnica (SCHCT). This digital humanities project publishes articles with innovative approaches to the history of science, technology and medicine, inviting to revise ‘many assumptions without historical evidence’ and to explore a ‘plurality of ways of knowing and acting, and their changing interactions.’
The articles have been published as a collection in Spanish under the title Historia global de la tecnología.
